NAKMAS appointments and promotions
05 June 2009
Following two legal issues surrounding the selling and teaching of martial arts weapons, NAKMAS would like to clarify the issue relating to weapons.
The practise of martial arts weapons is supported by NAKMAS providing the instructor is qualified and licensed by NAKMAS to teach weapons as part of their recognised and registered activities. All training must work alongside the NAKMAS Welfare Policy.
The selling of weapons for the use of martial arts practise is also supported by NAKMAS providing the weapon is sold to a NAKMAS licensed adult member. The selling of weapons directly to children is not acceptable and NAKMAS will not support this and would consider such action as a breach of NAKMAS rules and would also invalidate the NAKMAS insurance scheme to the club breaching the rules. For the avoidance of doubt, NAKMAS considers anyone under the age of 18 to be a child as clarified within the NAKMAS Welfare Policy.
The carrying and use of martial arts weapons for general purpose outside normal martial arts weapon training is not supported by NAKMAS and is illegal.
NAKMAS strongly advises that any weapons used for martial arts training is wrapped inside the martial arts garment and placed firmly inside the sports bag and taken directly to and from the martial arts club. The NAKMAS licence/insurance should also be carried to confirm martial arts practise in the event of being searched by the police or other security personnel.
NAKMAS reminds chief instructors that it is their responsibility to ensure that all students and instructors are aware that the carrying of martial arts weapons other than directly to and from a martial arts club is illegal and may lead to criminal prosecution.
NAKMAS will repeat and expand on the issue of weapons in the next issue of the NAKMAS Stay Safe magazine.
