NAKMAS National Governing Body

ABOUT NAKMAS
All about NAKMAS; it's officers, staff and structure
NAKMAS was formed in January 1992 following the defunct Martial Arts Commission (MAC).
NAKMAS, with 40,000 members, is Britain's only independent National Governing Body for both traditional and modern martial arts. This is compensated for by the participation of 20% adults and 80% youngsters from diverse backgrounds who practise various martial arts.

NAKMAS encourages adults and children, both able-bodied and impaired, to participate in martial arts, with a special interest and expertise in individuals on the autistic spectrum. Autism has affected two key members of the NAKMAS National Management Committee.

The British Standards Institution has certified and accredited NAKMAS to the International Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015) as well as the government-recognized Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport (Intermediate Level). The organisation takes equality and quality concerns very seriously, and it has a highly effective Welfare Policy that was designed with the NSPCC's aid.

Steve is a 5th dan black belt in Tsuyoi Ryu Karate which finds its roots in Kyukushin karate. Steve has been training actively since 1992 under Rev Joe Ellis and has never sought to become an instructor himself, purely for the fact that he enjoys the training and community that karate continues to give him.

Steve has trained across the country and has a history of being a robust and strong full contact fighter.

Steve also has a 1st dan black belt in Judo under the British Judo Association. His Judo journey started in 1985 and is still a very capable Judoka whenever he steps onto the mat.

Steve has been a committee member since 2017 and has helped Sandra with several policy updates, more recently being the Equality Module.

Steve enjoys strength training three times a week and strangely, he has managed to achieve a world record by deadlifting 129.5kg with just his middle finger for eight seconds in 2022, a record which is yet to be broken today.

Professionally, Steve is a multi site manager in the automotive industry, a passion which transfers into his love of cars, motorcycles and 1980’s BMX’s.
Personally, Steve is engaged to his beautiful fiancé Nicki. He lives in a small village in Kent called Shepherdswell with Nicki and his cat Brian.

Kelly first started training, age 7, in Shotokan Karate before falling in love with Ashihara Karate and then Kickboxing. She was awarded her 4th Dan Kickboxing in 2020 by the NAKMAS National Comittee.
Kelly is the Chief Instructor of TMAC Kickboxing, which she runs alongside her husband.

Professionally, Kelly is a Certified Nutritionist, Personal Trainer & Tutor. She is Company Director of a nutrition & fitness company, and has over 20 year’s experience in the health, fitness and wellness industry.

Kelly is a proud Mum to her 13 year old son, and has two labradors and two cats.
  • NAKMAS National Chief Executive - The Reverend Joe Ellis
    Rev Joe Ellis 8th Dan
    Email: joe.ellis@nakmas.org.uk

Joe was the National Chair of the NAKMAS National Governing Body from its inception in 1992 until February 2024. This was a voluntary and unpaid position. For the better part of the past 32 years, Joe has been at the forefront of NAKMAS and its many accomplishments. On February 1, 2024, he was appointed as the organisation's new part-time paid chief executive after stepping down as the national chair.

Joe has presided over two other national governing bodies, TABKO (The All British Karate Organisation) and KE (Karate England), has been a karate practitioner for just over 47 years and 43 years as a coach, and currently possesses an 8th Dan in karate and a 1st Dan in Ju Jitsu.

Autism, which Joe was clinically diagnosed in 2008, presents difficulties, particularly as he ages. Dr. Sandra Beale-Ellis, who is also autistic and a seventh-degree black belt in karate, is his wife. In 1992, they both founded NAKMAS.

They have two dogs: a Yorkshire terrier and a Yorkiepoo. They both reside in a tiny village just outside of Hythe, Kent.
